UES have been involved in the creation of ponds both for great crested newt mitigation, and for smaller projects to encourage garden wildlife.

Pond Creation

Ponds are particularly important as home to the protected great crested newt. As many as 1 in 3 ponds in Cheshire contain populations of great crested newts. Ponds also provide habitat for other amphibians such as, common toad, smooth newt , palmate newt and common frog . Water voles can also be found in ponds and other species such as bats and birds feed on the flies above ponds.

The vegetation in ponds varies depending on their depth. For example, plants like spiked water milfoil, rigid hornwort and yellow water lily are all characteristic of deeper water. Whereas Soft rush creeping bent and yellow flag iris are more characteristic of typical marginal areas.

Ponds are also important for many invertebrates such as the broad bodied chaser, red-eyed damselfly and the protected lesser silver water beetle.
